It’s Horween Chromexcel season and we’ve got it coming out of our ears. Next in line is our own Beefroll Penny Loafers: Brown CXL with soft-as-air crepe soles as well as Natural CXL with a standard leather sole.

Chromexcel, often abbreviated as “CXL,” is a waxy, durable “pull-up” leather tanned by Horween Leather Co. in Chicago. It is soft and supple with the first wear.

Paired with plantation crepe soles, this is the perfect slip-on shoe for those lazy days when your feet are tired and you don’t want to bend over to lace anything up.

The classic Beefroll style, adds simple flair to a traditional design. These shoes are hand sewn in Maine and feature no nonsense Yankee quality and style.

The ever popular Quoddy Maliseet Oxford is back in stock in a variety of colors and soles. You have your choice of Navy or Brown Chromexcel leather, a soft, supple, comfortable leather produced by Horween Leather Co. and perfect for easy casual wear.

The Navy shoe comes with red brick soles for beautiful contrast. You can choose between rugged Vibram Soles or the classic camp sole.

The Brown Maliseet comes with your choice of a red brick sole or a gum sole, both excellent choices for summer outfits.

One can choose to treat this shoe as either a casual or dress shoe. Use Montana Pitch Blend’s waxy leather dressing to protect it from the rain and keep the leather soft or use Saphir Renovateur and Wax Polish to dress them up and polish to a high gloss. Either way, they’ll look great for years.

The Making of Edward Green Shoes

You might say, to wear a pair of Edward Green shoes is to love them and that would certainly be true. But to “see” them crafted elevates the appreciation to yet another level. The craftsmen and women that make Edward Green shoes and boots are artisans in the true sense of the word. For quality shoe making is not just a craft it is also an art form.

For over one hundred twenty years Edward Green Ltd. has been producing their wares in Northampton, England the cradle of English shoemaking. Today many techniques remain the same and shoes are made using equipment that is decades old and irreplaceable.

One of the most fascinating processes is the hand sewing of the aprons of shoes like Dover, Ecton, Halifax, and Ashby.

It’s captivating watching the “Master” craftsman as he binds his thread with wax to many long strands then connects it to the end of a pigs bristle, which is thinner than a needle. A block is lashed to his thigh over which the upper is fixed. With awl and bristle in hand the making begins with flawless accuracy from his hands to our feet.
